Counting down to forever
until we say “I do” on
One umbrella, a lot of Cape rain and a conversation that never stopped. This is how two strangers on Dorp Street ended up here.
Mary ducked under the awning of a little bookshop in Stellenbosch to escape a winter downpour. John offered his umbrella — which promptly turned inside out. They gave up, laughed, and waited out the storm over two flat whites. The rain stopped hours later. The conversation didn't.
Their first road trip came with a wrong turn, a flat tyre and no signal for forty kilometres. Mary navigated with a paper map, John changed the tyre in the drizzle, and when they finally reached the cabin they sat on the old jetty until the sun went down. That evening, they both quietly knew.
After dinner at the restaurant where they had their first proper date, John suggested a walk. Under the street lights on Kloof Street, with a ring he'd been hiding for three weeks, he went down on one knee. Mary said yes before he could finish the question.
On the last night of the year, among the vineyards of Franschhoek and everyone they love, John and Mary will say “I do” — and ring in the New Year as husband and wife.
